WORLD HERITAGE COASTLINE
Dorset News Update
This beautiful 95 mile stetch of the impressive coast line incorporates
Dorset's Isle of Purbeck, is now officially one of the Great Natural Wonders
of the World after gaining World Heritage Site Status.
This unique coastline setting
has such universal value that it is regarded as 'the heritage of all
mankind'. Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell said, 'I am delighted that
this coastline has received World Heritage Status.'
It is now on a par with The Great Barrier Reef, the Grand Canyon,
the Taj Mahal, the City of Bath, Hadrians Wall, Tower of London and
Stonehenge. |
|
Purbeck's coastline encompasses the
Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. The coastline features miles
of sandy beaches, a diverse shoreline, a variety of cliffs and impressive
scenery, and a geological walk through time and will now at last be considered
as a National Treasure and be recogised for its global importance.
